What NOT to do!

Don't take an old deck, install wall sheathing, a rubber membrane, and then top it all off with carpet. The water stuck in the carpet will eventually find its way into the wood.

This job is being re-done with an interesting product called DecTek, http://www.dec-tec.com/products_membranes.cfm

Small Bathroom Dormer

Before
After (almost, not painted yet)
This a small dormer we built on an older house in the Highlands. The 35 sf dormer allowed us to tuck a small master bath in an area that was previously nearly unusable. More pics to come.

Back to work, between holidays and bad weather

We are slowly moving forward on Covered Bridge Road. The porch finally has a roof and the project is beginning to take shape. Weather permitting we will complete framing this week and begin installing windows next week. The energy efficient windows used on this job qualify for the maximum $1500 tax credit.

Covered Bridge Road

We finally started work on our most recent job. We tore of the existing gutterboard and a couple of feet of roof deck. Suprisingly we found a 3/8" thick plywood surface sitting on top of 2x4 truss framing. Probably cutting edge at the time, now the deck must be at least 7/16" per code. Despite the undersized lumber, the roof shows no signs of sagging or other damage. We added new rafter tails so the house will now have an overhang on all sides. We were moving right along until being rained out on Friday. We'll be back this week to
finish up roof framing and begin foundation work.

New Job on Covered Bridge Road about to Begin

We are finally about to begin a job we began bidding last November on Covered Bridge Road in Oldham County. The existing home is a very simple farmhouse that was built in the 1950s. Using a design by architect Dan Grimm, we will be adding a huge 2 story screened porch to the side of the house, a new front vestibule and deck, and reworking the mudroom on the left side of the house. The house will also get new windows and a new metal roof. We will post updates as work continues.

Sunday

Louisville Home Garden and Remodeling Show

The show was a success for us, despite the fact that our booth was hidden behind a children's McMansion playhouse and a giant pirate ship. If you did meet us at the show please call me to set up an appointment.

Highlands Room Addition and Remodel Complete

Before - This house had one small bathroom on the second floor. The homeowners raised two kids, all sharing the single bathroom for 15 years. Now that the kids are moving away to college, the parents finally decided to build a master suite.

After We only added 200 sf of footprint to the house, but we were able to make a great master suite on the rear of the second floor, a new living room, an expanded kitchen, and a half bath. We built a deck off of the new living room which also created a nice covered patio for the walkout basement.

Room Addition to back of Existing House

New Carriage House

Carriage House Interior Photos:

This project was completed over a two year period. We began inside the original home, remodeling the only bath in the home. We then moved to the living room and converted the dining room into a library. We then moved to the back yard, where we tore down a dilapidated garage and replaced it with a two story carriage house with a loft.

After the carriage house we moved back to the house and built a one story addition on the rear of the home. This gave the homeowners room to add a much needed 1st floor bathroom, a breakfast nook, and a larger living room.
